Boston 2011

This year's conference blends many teaching and learning initiatives, from Curriculum Mapping to Understanding by Design.  I will present a morning session very similar to last year's (Florida) presentation, focusing on the rationale for the UbD framework and the need to connect our curriculum design to the so-called '21st-century skills'.  Even though this is a term that many deride, the themes and skill areas give us another lens through which we can evaluate the validity and power of our curriculum.  

In the afternoon, I am looking forward to focusing in on Understanding by Design's AMT acronym.  AMT references the teaching goals and learning roles common to our practice; ultimately, we want students to Acquire information from our various content areas, Make meaning of that content, and finally Transfer it to a new and unique situation.  Sounds easy enough, but if you are like me, the curriculum drives me forward, and I have to remind myself to take time for transfer.  I am working on a Livebinder to share just a few Web-based possibilities for infusing all three into a technology-focused classroom.  If this session is like others, I know I will have many participants willing to share their own strategies, too.

Houston 2009

Last year's ASCD conference featured Differentiated Instruction, What Works in Schools, and Understanding by Design.  My two sessions will discuss the connections between the UbD model of curriculum design and writing and technology (respectively).   I am a strong proponent of authentic assessment and the stage 3 WHERETO mandate that we must give our kids time to reflect, rethink, and revise.  For me, that is what these two presentations are all about.  I hope you find them thought-provoking.
