Homework? 09/13/2008

Homework expert Harris Cooper, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University, discusses the impact of homework with Madeleine Brand, as part of a series of reports on education. You can hear the interview here…

How much is enough or too much?  Basically, the ten minute rule still stands.  10 minutes per grade. More than that shows no negligible impact on learning…

Kids in primary school should be guided by parents to make sure that 10 minute assignment is not being turned into an hour long assignment.  If the 10 minute rule is being broken, the professor suggests creating a dialogue with the teacher.

Students today are being given way too much homework. Not only are teachers assigning too much work, but teachers within given schools are not communicating with each other. On any given Thursday, students could be studying for 3 or more Friday tests (the most popular test day of the week.) I've read that there is little benefit from assigning homework, unless the students with homework score at the lower end. It's time to call attention to the homework issue. My daughters in grade school get as much as 2 hours a night. Most of the work they bring home seems to me to be busy work.

I hear what you say. I think that we need to make sure we reinforce the habit. Without hte habit of homework, our students will surely fail in college.

There should be balance where homework is concerned. It makes sense to me to use the 10 minute rule, but that will only work if teachers communicate with each other, too.
